A Homesteading Love Story – Part Two

Cutting our wedding cake

Getting Married – and Getting Married Again

After graduation, I job hunted for several months from Madison, but came up empty handed.  August suggested that I move in with him at his parent’s place (with their blessing – they had a big house).  Now I know that some people will be put off by the idea of living together before marriage, but I sincerely believe that if you can live with both your future husband and your future in-laws for an extended time, your marriage is likely to last.  You will see the good, the bad and the ugly.  My husband’s parents are good people, and seeing them still happily married after so many years together was a very positive thing for me, since both my dad and stepdad were pretty rotten.

August took me with on a business trip to California shortly after we moved in together in May 1994, and planned a romantic proposal on the beach.  Of course, he forgot to pack the ring, so that didn’t go quite as planned.  Life is like that.  When we got home, he proposed with his grandmother’s engagement ring.  She blessed us with their wedding bands as well.  She and Grandpa Neverman were together so long that the bands were worn thin with age, so I only wear them on special occasions, but will treasure them always. Love is About Patience, Humor and Shared Dreams

Marriage is the Union of Two Good Forgivers

What is Love About?

If we were to believe Hollywood and fairy tales, love is about some woman with long flowing hair being swept off her feet by her Prince Charming.  Lately the Hollywood version seems to often skip spiritual love altogether, simply focusing on sex, or we get the sitcom version with the hapless, incompetent male being dominated by the wife who does everything.  Is it any wonder that half of marriages end in divorce if folks really think this is the way “love” should be?

I’m not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I do happen to be happily married to my best friend, August.  We’re been together for over 17 years, and been friends for over 20, so I believe we’re doing something right.  In the interest of bringing a little reality to the Valentine hype, I decided to share our story. Homeschooling Resources Meme

Dunc planting flowers in their special flower bed

My friend, Tina, over at Being Made New tagged me in a homeschooling meme, so I’m doing my best to play along.  Yes, we homeschool, even though I don’t post about it a ton.  If I only had a clone who could help me get everything done…

We’re fairly eclectic, but I wouldn’t say we’re full tilt unschoolers, because I do dictate that the boys learn certain material, but we also make time to answer questions and pursue their interests, which has led to some pretty interesting learning opportunities.

1. One homeschool book I have enjoyed:

Homeschooling and the Voyage of Self-Discovery:  A Journey of Original Seeking by David Albert.  It’s been some time since I read this one, but I remember thinking, “That’s it!  That’s what’s wrong with conventional schooling (and right with homeschooling).”  The bean experiment on page 147 perfectly epitomizes the futility of so much of the school experience.

2. One resource I wouldn’t be without:
The book Home Learning Year by Year:  How to Design a Curriculum from Preschool to High School by Rebecca Rupp. I go through this book several times a year just to remind me of things I’d like to cover.  I use it as a rough guideline for our curriculum.

3. One resource I wish I had never bought:
The Five in a Row guidebook.  It was highly recommended by friends, but both boys absolutely hated the idea of rereading the same story each day for five days in a row.

5. One resource I will be using this year:
Fluenz Spanish – the time has come for us to tackle a foreign language.

6. One resource I would like to buy:
Some better chemistry equipment.  The boys want to blow some other things up besides kitchen products.

7. One resource I wish existed:
Better history texts:  I want a history resource that tied together more of the influences surrounding the events, including climate changes (yes, the climate has always been changing), and a US history course without so much left wing bias, and more information (which to the best of my knowledge does not exist) on ancient human civilizations dating back 8000-20,000 years ago, prior to the last three successive major deglaciations, such as the Harappan civilization of India (you can get a small taste of this information in the book Underworld by Graham Hancock).

8. One homeschool catalog I enjoy reading:
The Rainbow Resource Catalog.  I can spend hours digging through that book.

9. One homeschooling website I use regularly:
I visit The Homeschool Lounge once in a while, but most of the sites I visit doing homeschooling research are just resource sites, like TED.com.

10. Tag other homeschoolers:

I’m tagging Christy at Adventuring through Life
Jo at Jo’s Health Corner
Wendy at Little Farm in the City
and Marillyn at Just Making Noise

There are a ton of other awesome homeschooling blog ladies I know, but I figured I would just grab a few at random.  If you’d like to join in, please do!
