My friend, Tina, over at Being Made New tagged me in a homeschooling meme, so I’m doing my best to play along. Yes, we homeschool, even though I don’t post about it a ton. If I only had a clone who could help me get everything done…
We’re fairly eclectic, but I wouldn’t say we’re full tilt unschoolers, because I do dictate that the boys learn certain material, but we also make time to answer questions and pursue their interests, which has led to some pretty interesting learning opportunities.

1. One homeschool book I have enjoyed:
Homeschooling and the Voyage of Self-Discovery: A Journey of Original Seeking by David Albert. It’s been some time since I read this one, but I remember thinking, “That’s it! That’s what’s wrong with conventional schooling (and right with homeschooling).” The bean experiment on page 147 perfectly epitomizes the futility of so much of the school experience.
2. One resource I wouldn’t be without:
The book Home Learning Year by Year: How to Design a Curriculum from Preschool to High School by Rebecca Rupp. I go through this book several times a year just to remind me of things I’d like to cover. I use it as a rough guideline for our curriculum.
3. One resource I wish I had never bought:
The Five in a Row guidebook. It was highly recommended by friends, but both boys absolutely hated the idea of rereading the same story each day for five days in a row.
5. One resource I will be using this year:
Fluenz Spanish – the time has come for us to tackle a foreign language.
6. One resource I would like to buy:
Some better chemistry equipment. The boys want to blow some other things up besides kitchen products.
7. One resource I wish existed:
Better history texts: I want a history resource that tied together more of the influences surrounding the events, including climate changes (yes, the climate has always been changing), and a US history course without so much left wing bias, and more information (which to the best of my knowledge does not exist) on ancient human civilizations dating back 8000-20,000 years ago, prior to the last three successive major deglaciations, such as the Harappan civilization of India (you can get a small taste of this information in the book Underworld by Graham Hancock).
8. One homeschool catalog I enjoy reading:
The Rainbow Resource Catalog. I can spend hours digging through that book.
9. One homeschooling website I use regularly:
I visit The Homeschool Lounge once in a while, but most of the sites I visit doing homeschooling research are just resource sites, like TED.com.
10. Tag other homeschoolers:
I’m tagging Christy at Adventuring through Life
Jo at Jo’s Health Corner
Wendy at Little Farm in the City
and Marillyn at Just Making Noise
There are a ton of other awesome homeschooling blog ladies I know, but I figured I would just grab a few at random. If you’d like to join in, please do!
